Mission Statement
We believe that all children are unique, can learn, and succeed.

The staff at Highland Elementary School believes that all children can learn.  We also believe in helping them be successful both as individuals and as team members.  We attempt to make school fun and interesting and to provide children with the learning opportunities necessary to achieve grade level standards.  Maintaining a strong academic program and programs that are developmentally appropriate are priorities with the staff.

School Goals for 2013-2014:

  • The Highland School Site Council is developing multi-year goals that will measure overall student growth in meeting and exceeding the benchmarks in math, science, writing, and reading for the OSWA.   Goals are reviewed each fall to measure student growth in math, writing, and reading comprehension. A review of data is critical as our school moves forward in its efforts to improve student learning, fine tune curriculum, and increase state test scores.
  • Highland is increasing Title 1A effectiveness by focusing on increasing student achievement in the area of reading and math. Our Title 1A program sponsors motivating and successful programs such as Reading Intervention, Family Reading Logs, and Read Across America, celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Highland teachers are excited to begin using a new reading adoption this school year as we strive to increase reading levels at our school. Our school is focused on improving student math skills through the introduction of a new computerized math program called IXL that supports student growth at the individual math skill level.
  • As a school, we continue with our commitment to improve school-wide behavior through positive student support and interventions. This year we are in the third year of PBS, designed to support this effort.

Highland Elementary School is a strong vital school serving a diverse and supportive neighborhood.  Several unique programs and a dedicated staff willing to make sure all students at Highland receive the best possible education make it an attractive and successful place for children. During the 2010-2011 school year, all students will receive increased instructional time in the areas of reading, writing, and math as part of our on-going efforts to increase student success.

Highland participates in the OASIS senior volunteer program involving intergenerational tutoring, as well as being the only SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) school in the district; emphasizing our dedication to teaching children to learn to read and to enjoy reading. Highland Elementary School is looking for volunteers for the SMART program. Training and support is provided. For information about SMART, call Metro Area SMART at (503) 230-2944. We are fortunate to have an exceptional community of parents and volunteers dedicated to making their children’s school the best!
