The school’s most important objective is to provide every student with skills that result in self-directed, responsible, and competent learners. The staff believes this occurs through the use of a variety of instructional strategies, an engaging and challenging curriculum, and constant monitoring and self-evaluation. Students are most successful when the staff works together and communicates regularly with parents regarding overall performance and progress. Young adolescents are most likely to achieve their personal best when there is a safe, nurturing, and intellectually challenging environment that values individual contributions and progress.
As a community of learners, the students, staff, and parents at West Orient Middle School strive to practice respect, responsibility, relationships, and results.
- Create a safe environment where students take ownership of their learning.
- All students demonstrate adequate yearly growth and achievement in math and reading based on Oregon Statewide Assessment RIT scores.
- Increase the percentage of students who meet or exceed state benchmark standards in reading, mathematics, writing, and science.
West Orient Middle School is special because it is well known for its commitment to high academic standards and a strong level of parent participation. Its students have received commendations for academic achievement and community service, as well as for band and choir performances. Students succeed because there is community support, effective teaching, attention to content and process, and a parent-school partnership.
