Everyday, another 1,500 kids become daily smokers, and one-third of them will die prematurely as a result of getting hooked.† Oregon has the highest rate of tobacco sales to minors in the nation. Approximately 80-90 percent of smokers start smoking before the age of 18. Thatís why†Adventist Medical Centerís Foundation†is helping educate children about the hazards of smoking by bringing in a family member of the tobacco industry.

Patrick Reynolds, a grandson of tobacco company founder RJ Reynolds spoke out publicly against the cigarette industry in Congress after his own father died from smoking. Reynolds has become an outspoken opponent of big tobacco and will share his knowledge of the family business with youth in Gresham.† Reynolds is now executive director of the Foundation for a Smokefree America.

Mr. Reynolds will speak to students of†Gresham High School†on Monday, March 5 at 9:45 a.m. He will tell his personal story of crossing over to fight for the other side, and then provide an update on where Oregon stands in the battle against smoking.† Reynolds will share the story of his fatherís death from smoking by using the very products that RJ Reynolds made popular. Heíll even reveal how the tobacco industry has targeted youth.
