Students return to school grounds beautified by community volunteers

Local churches join together to pull weeds, paint, and prune

As students in the Gresham-Barlow School District return to school this week, spruced up school grounds are welcoming them back to class.

More than five hundred volunteers from faith-based organizations, parent groups, and the community joined together on August 24 and other weekends throughout the month for the Gresham-Barlow School District’s “Community Care Day.”

Volunteers worked on several beautification projects, which included pulling weeds, raking, spreading bark dust, pruning, and painting.

Due to budget constraints, the Gresham-Barlow School District is limited in its upkeep of school grounds during the summer months.

“We are so thankful to the individuals who came out this year and every year to get our school grounds ready for students,” said Gresham-Barlow School District Facilities Director Terry Taylor. “Volunteers from East Hill Church adopted twelve of our nineteen schools and thanks to them and the other churches involved in the effort, our school grounds are in great shape for the start of school.”

“We just love to be a blessing to our community,” said Easthill Church Outreach Pastor Ray Young. “Community Care Day is a great way to support our schools, give back to the community, and have fun, all at the same time.”

In addition to East Hill Church, participants in this year’s event included Cornerstone Church, First Baptist Church, Good Shepherd Community Church, Grace Community Church, Gresham Bible Church, and Mountainview Christian Church participated in the event.

The Gresham-Barlow School District has been receiving “Community Care Day” help from churches and volunteers since 2004.
