School board commends Schlachter in fourth year of superintendency

Superintendent of Schools recognized for focused leadership, use of data to make instructional decisions

The Gresham-Barlow School Board commended the leadership of Superintendent Jim Schlachter during his fourth year as superintendent of schools in its annual evaluation. The board released its report at the June 12 board meeting.

The school board praised Schlachter for keeping the district’s mission and vision at the forefront in all decision-making whether hiring staff, building the budget, or negotiating a contract with employee groups.

“Superintendent Schlachter’s vision for the school district is firmly fixed on the long-term needs of our schools and the academic needs of our students,” said Board Chair Matt O’Connell.
The board commended Mr. Schlachter for the district’s work to use data to make instructional decisions and monitor the effectiveness of the educational system. The school board noted that high school graduation rates continue to increase.

The superintendent also received high marks for community and staff engagement.

“Superintendent Schlachter places a priority on involving staff and the community in our work,” said O’Connell. “This is a critical component to the success of this district and our ability to meet future challenges.”

Schlachter was appointed superintendent of schools in July of 2010. Prior to that, he served as assistant superintendent for two years. Before becoming assistant superintendent, he spent four years as the district’s K-8 director. He has also served as principal of Gordon Russell Middle School and Damascus Middle School. In addition to his administrative experience, Schlachter spent 18 years in the classroom teaching high school and middle school science.

The board’s annual evaluation focused on five areas.
