School board commends Schlachter in fifth year of superintendency

Superintendent of Schools recognized for focus on continuous improvement and community engagement

The Gresham-Barlow School Board commended the leadership of Superintendent Jim Schlachter during his fifth year as superintendent of schools in its annual evaluation. The board released its report at the June 4 board meeting.

“Superintendent Schlachter is focused on continuous improvement and enhancing the academic opportunities we provide to our students,” said Board Chair Matt O’Connell.

The school board praised Schlachter for his work to update the district’s strategic plan and involve staff and the community in the planning process.

“Superintendent Schlachter understands that active community and staff engagement is critical to the district’s ability to be successful,” said O’Connell. “He involved students, staff, parents and community members in updating the district’s strategic plan and is working to engage a broad representation of stakeholders in school bond planning.”

The board commended Mr. Schlachter for the comprehensive visits he routinely makes to schools to observe educators in the classroom and working together in data teams.

“Superintendent Schlachter makes it a priority to spend time in our schools and classrooms,” said O’Connell. “These visits help him stay apprised of the progress being made to increase student achievement.”

Schlachter was appointed superintendent of schools in July of 2010. Prior to that, he served as assistant superintendent for two years. Before becoming assistant superintendent, he spent four years as the district’s K-8 director. He has also served as principal of Gordon Russell Middle School and Damascus Middle School. In addition to his administrative experience, Schlachter spent 18 years in the classroom teaching high school and middle school science.

The board’s annual evaluation focused on five areas.
